As one of our early data team hires reporting directly to the CTO, you'll have the opportunity to extract meaningful insights from healthcare data that drive our platform's effectiveness. You'll apply sophisticated statistical methods to analyze patterns and trends while working alongside a team with decades of behavioral health experience.

The Role We're seeking an experienced Senior Data Scientist who is passionate about improving the way healthcare is administered in the United States. You'll take ownership of analyzing complex healthcare datasets to uncover actionable insights that power the Onos platform. As an early team member, you'll work closely with our ML engineering team while maintaining statistical excellence in all our analytical approaches. This role is a hybrid role based in San Francisco, where you'll be expected to work at our office in person at least once a week.
What you'll be doing at Onos: Build & Optimize AI Pipelines: Work with large-scale EHR datasets on information retrieval and reasoning problems. Finetune language models, train other transformer-based models, design RAG pipelines and leverage traditional NLP methods where appropriate
Detect Fraud, Waste and Abuse: Develop sophisticated statistical models to identify patterns of fraud, waste, and abuse in healthcare claims and provider behaviors
Identify Deviations from Standards of Care: Create algorithms and metrics to detect when providers deviate from evidence-based care standards in behavioral and mental health
Apply advanced statistical methods to analyze healthcare data patterns and generate actionable insights
Collaborate with ML engineers to develop features and metrics that improve model performance
Establish statistical rigor in our analysis methods and ensure data quality standards
What we're looking for: Master's or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field
5+ years experience applying advanced statistical methods to complex real-world problems
Proven track record of delivering impactful data science solutions in production environments
Strong proficiency with Python and related data analysis libraries and AWS data tools
Excellent communication skills, with ability to explain complex statistical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Self-directed worker comfortable with ambiguity and rapid iteration
Driven to take ownership of projects and deliver impactful outcomes
Bonus points if you have: Significant experience working with healthcare data and with HIPAA best practices
Worked with machine learning and large language models for end-user applications
Background in building production-grade data pipelines that feed statistical models
