Job Description

Job Summary:

Responsible for the coordination of food services in the total Head Start program with cooperative agencies in compliance with ACF, USDA, and other appropriate policies and guidelines.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that the food provided in each center meets the individual child’s daily nutritional needs and promotes sound physical, social, and emotional growth and development.
  • Provide on-site assistance to centers in developing and implementing written plans for program improvements.
  • Assist centers in maintaining a food inventory and submitting orders for donated foods. Compile a composite inventory and quarterly order for donated foods. Assist in the pick-up and distribution of donated foods.
  • Prepare monthly reports of meal census, food costs, reimbursement claims for submission to the Child Food Care Program. 
  • Being knowledgeable and proficient in the State of Oklahoma’s CACFP KidKare software program. Also be able to work with staff towards proficiency of said software.
  • Assist the centers to provide an environment for nutritional services which will support and promote the use of the feeding situation as a learning opportunity.
  • Provide training to staff, child, and family in understanding the relationship of nutrition to health, factors which influence food practices, variety of ways to provide for nutritional needs and to apply this knowledge in the development of sound food habits even after leaving the Head Start Program.
  • Monitor the food service program in each center to assure compliance with federal guidelines and local and state health regulations.
  • Provide training for staff in menu planning, food planning, food purchasing, food preparation and storage, sanitation, and personal hygiene.
  • Coordinate with the Policy Council and Health Advisory Committee in implementing and evaluating the nutrition program and written policy on the feeding of children according to their nutritional and developmental needs.
  • Work as part of the Head Start Support Service Team for successful component integration.
  • This position requires frequent travel to offsite locations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Working Conditions:

  • The environment is varied to include the Head Start Support office, Head Start Centers, and various Community Resources. 
  • Must be mobile and agile to perform required tasks such as lifting up to forty-five (45) pounds, reaching above the head and below the knee, or positioning body as to be on child’s level and floor level. 
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and able to run or walk hurriedly for a child’s safety.

 

Qualifications Required:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in the Nutrition, Home Economics, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in nutrition counseling or related area, substituting one year experience for each year of the required education.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in nutrition education, counseling, or related area.
  • Human relations and management skills.
  • Have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and transportation available.
  • Must meet all applicable requirements established by state and funding sources, to include fingerprinting.
  • Meet required Work Environment standards.
  • Desired:
    • Dietitian.
    • Experience in a large food service program.

The Community Action Agency of OKC/Oklahoma County was established in 1966, and initially was financed by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, which launched the nation’s “War on Poverty.” Eventually the funding was consolidated into the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG). The Community Services division was implemented early on, serving low-income residents of Oklahoma County. Early programs included implementing the Food Stamp program and offering a nutrition program for seniors at meal centers.Today the division has greatly expanded to offer legal assistance; tax assistance; summer youth programs; senior transportation to meal sites, medical appointments, and shopping; rent and mortgage assistance; and other community needs.HEAD STARTThe Agency’s first Head Start center opened its doors to 39 families in 1965. Within two years, nine new centers and 575 children entered Head Start in Oklahoma County. Today we have 26 Head Start classrooms in 15 public schools, and 98 Head Start classrooms total providing services to thousands of children in Oklahoma County.
