The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. He/she must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus and obey all laws, regulations and rules of conduct. The School Bus Driver must also deal with passengers, parents/guardians, school officials and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service. The School Bus Driver must make note of and report on any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner. School routes drivers may have the opportunity to volunteer for additional work, such as Charter trips to community activities. Responsibilities include safely operating the school bus in compliance with all relevant laws, policies, and procedures; performing daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections; cleaning the bus as required; reporting maintenance issues promptly; picking up and dropping off students according to a set schedule; ensuring students understand their responsibilities as passengers; maintaining order and discipline on the bus; documenting and reporting any behavioral or disciplinary issues. Skills and abilities required include holding a valid NYS CDL License with P and S endorsements, meeting all 19A NYS School Bus Driver requirements, strong knowledge of traffic laws and driving safety practices, ability to follow written and verbal instructions, ability to interact well with children and earn their respect, and ability to adapt to industry technology. Requirements include completing all NYS and Federal documents including background checks, providing valid forms of ID for employment, permitting the company to contact three provided references, and providing a history of residential addresses.
