The Foster School of Business –CONSULTING& Business Development Center has an outstanding opportunity for an interim Executive Director to join their team. The interim Executive Director is a role that is being created due to the retirement of the Founding Director of theCONSULTINGand Business Development Center (CBDC). During this time of transition and training, the interim Executive Director will begin to assume the relationships with corporate, foundation, and individual donors, alumni, and business community volunteers’ and UW and Foster School leadership. Additionally, the interim Executive Director will engage with the center’s founders, long-time partners, Foster School faculty and leaders, and UW leadership to ensure continuity of the vision and mission of the CBDC. In partnership with JPMorgan Chase, CBDC’s National Ascend program provides a path for growth for diverse small businesses through mentorship, access to capital, and connections with corporate partners. Since 2018, CBDC and the Ascend program have helped support over two thousand businesses, increasing revenue of those businesses by over 4 billion dollars, helping to create over twenty-eight thousand jobs. The interim Executive Director will preserve and advance CBDC’s vision, oversee its strategic direction, and lead the staff’s effort to carry out the Center’s mission. The interim Executive Director will also cultivate relationships that result in funding the Center, expand on partnerships with the Center that generate program participants and volunteers, increase the visibility of the Center its work (research, experiential learning, and education for underserved business owners), and impact in Washington State and nationally. The Founding Director, the Interim Executive Director, and the Faculty Director will be the public face of the Center and a thought leader in advancing knowledge that fosters leadership, insights, and progress to better humanity.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CULTIVATE A NETWORK OF STRATEGIC PARTNERS AND FUNDERS Build reciprocal supportive relationships with prospects, donors and partners in partnership with staff from the Center, the Foster School and the UW as well as with members of the Center’s Advisory Board and alumni network. Support outreach efforts to identify and build relationships with underserved business owners and the CBDC. Continue to nurture relationships with other leaders and thought partners in higher education and academia that support the mission and purpose of the CBDC. Secure annual operating funds and endowment funds individually and in partnership with UW and Foster School advancement and the Dean of the Foster School. Develop and implement fund development systems and operations to ensure all aspects of donor and prospect relationships are tracked and utilized, donors and prospects are well stewarded, and donors are thanked quickly and thoughtfully.

PROGRAM LEADERSHIP

With the leadership team, preserve and advance the Center’s history and vision, as established by Dean and Professor Emeritus William D. Bradford, Professor Emeritus Thaddeus H. Spratlen, and Founding Director, Michael Verchot. Create and implement strategic plans that enable the Center to work efficiently, sustainably, and effectively to fulfill its mission. With the leadership team, develop and shape the Center’s culture to ensure attraction and retention of staff, promote its values, and model a commitment to the Center’s work and impact, and dedication to high-quality outcomes. Prepare and support the Director of Programs in deploying staff effectively, empowering staff to execute their work, building alignment across the Center, and ensuring the right mix of programs and activities achieve the Center’s goals and objectives. In partnership with the leadership team, develop, plan and execute programs that serve businesses owned by socially and economically disadvantaged business owners in Washington State and across the US. Establish and ensure effectiveness of the Center’s advisory boards.

RESEARCH SUPPORT

In partnership with the Center’s Faculty Director, to support research consistent with the Center’s mission both through research awards and facilitating enrichment activities to highlight and develop scholars. In partnership with the Center’s Faculty Director, set and execute strategy that advances Foster faculty and doctoral student scholarly research.

ADMINISTRATION

Work with the attorney general’s office to address issues, including protecting the intellectual property of students and volunteers and providing them with liability coverage; create and manage contractual agreements with corporate partners. Work with the UW’s Office of Sponsored Programs, UW Foundation and others to ensure timely and accurate submission of grant proposals and receipt of funds. In partnership with the Director of Programs, create the Center’s annual budget, understand the financial picture of the Center and oversee the finances of the Center. Identify, engage, and negotiate with vendors, serve as signatory contracts and agreements that bind the Center, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements. Lead Responsibilities: Success of the Center to meet its SMART goals Annual and Endowment Fundraising Coordination with the Dean, Foster and UW department chairs and faculty Coordination with the attorney general’s office, the office of sponsored programs, Foster and UW advancement Professional growth and work accountability of direct reports Budgeting and financial management Supervisory Responsibilities: This position will have one direct full-time report and occasional student assistants as direct reports.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, education, economics, ethnic studies, or similar and a minimum of 8-years’ experience in a professional environment. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience in leading organizations including strong skills in program strategy and delivery, evaluation, project management, team management, and interpersonal communication. The ideal candidate is passionate about growing businesses that build wealth for socially and economically disadvantaged individuals in Washington State and across the US. The ideal candidate fully believes in the Center’s mission of accelerating student careers, growing business and jobs in communities where they are needed the most and advancing knowledge through research. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience in partnering or supporting underserved individuals/organizations.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

As a self-sustaining unit of a public research university in Washington state, the ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge or the ability to gain extensive knowledge of the private and public sectors in this state that can contribute to the Center’s success. Candidates with a lived experience of navigating structural barriers and who reflect the community served by the Center, add considerable value to this work. Experience leading and fundraising for organizations that serve socially and economically disadvantaged individuals, communities, or businesses in Washington State is also highly desired.
