JOB HIGHLIGHTS

POSITION PURPOSE:  

Develop and implement public relations tactics that support initiatives of Visit Detroit, including media/influencer hosting, story pitching, writing press releases and website content, and developing relationships with marketing, communications and tourism partners. The position works closely with domestic and international travel media, in addition to local, regional and national media outlets. The position also works with outside vendors and industry partners as appropriate.

LOCATION & SCHEDULE: 

  • Full time
  • This position currently involves a hybrid working model with 2 days remote, and 3 days in-office in Detroit, MI.

WHAT WE REQUIRE:

  • Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license (most positions). 
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing/communications, public relations, journalism, business, or related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience public/media relations. 
  • 2-3 years of professional writing experience. 
  • Ability to travel overnight, and out of state when required.
  • Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license. 
  • Valid, unrestricted U.S. passport. 

PREFERRED:

  • 2+ years of combined experience in communications, public relations, journalism and marketing.
  • Work experience in the tourism/travel or entertainment industry.  

HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE:

  • Committed to partnering with Visit Detroit in embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into company culture and operations, and actively contributing to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all employees and stakeholders. 
  • Develop the implementation of comprehensive media relations strategies and campaigns.
  • Measure and track metrics for media coverage of Metro Detroit as a destination and Visit Detroit as a brand.
  • Develop and manage partnerships on media familiarization tours (FAMs), coordinate itineraries and host travel writers and influencers on individual and group visits of the destination to generate positive coverage.
  • Write press releases, tip sheets, media advisories and other promotional materials, and pitches stories to media as appropriate.
  • In partnership with the Senior Director of Communications and Media Relations Manager, respond to media inquiries.
  • Maintain image library and manage image requests.
  • Work with convention sales and services staff to help generate local media coverage of Visit Detroit and client events (Annual Meeting, ROSE Awards, Family Reunion Planning Seminar, etc.)
  • Work with the Partnership Services department on assisting booked clients with PR needs.
  • Participate in conferences dedicated to fostering connections between Convention Bureaus and media and public relations professionals at networking and marketplace events.

OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS:

  • Works with vendors to provide information and monitor project progress.
  • Implements other marketing communications initiatives as assigned by the Senior Director, Communications and VP of Marketing.
  • Assists on special Visit Detroit projects requiring communications/media relations support.
  • Track travel and local media for reporting purposes, by maintaining our database of stories. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES:

  • 2–3 years of experience in communications and/or journalism or working in a PR agency environment.
  • Working and growing knowledge of metro Detroit attractions, restaurants, events, hotels, and meeting facilities.
  • Versatile writing skillset, including AP style, and outstanding communication skills, with the ability to clearly express thoughts, ideas, and concepts, verbally and in writing, in the English language.
  • Skilled in organizing, prioritizing, and analyzing multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to think and manage creatively in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains a positive and professional work attitude, appearance, and behavior even in the most demanding situations.
  • Ability to work effectively in both remote and in-person environments; proficient with video conferencing software and remote work tools.
  • Proficient in using personal computer software and applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
  • Available weekends and outside of normal work hours for assignments and travel, as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Office work involves extended periods of sitting or working at a desk, utilizing repetitive typing motions on a computer or laptop, and reading text on a video display monitor.
  • Ability to perform extensive standing and/or walking for work-related assignments and events.
  • Ability to lift push, and or carry up to 25lbs. occasionally. 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • This role requires some overnight travel locally, nationally, and internationally, on occasion.
