Founded in 1697, Abington Friends School (AFS) is among the oldest primary and secondary schools in the United States. Located on its original campus in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, AFS is an independent Quaker school serving students from age 3 through grade 12. The school enrolls approximately 615 students from 75 ZIP codes in the greater Philadelphia area and hosts international students from across the globe. With a faculty and staff of nearly 150, AFS emphasizes academic excellence, character development, and leadership, guided by Quaker values.

The 50-acre campus features modern facilities, a historic Quaker Meetinghouse, and extensive green spaces that provide a vibrant and supportive environment for learning.

Leadership

Nicole Hood, Head of School

Dr. Nicole Hood joined AFS in 2024 as its 10th Head of School of the modern era, bringing more than two decades of teaching and leadership experience in independent schools and higher education. She is committed to building strong school communities that provide a robust college preparatory experience. Her prior experience includes leadership and teaching roles in both higher education and independent schools, including Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Howard University, Spelman College, and Georgia State University. Nicole holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Michigan.

The Role of the CFOO

AFS seeks an energetic, innovative, and strategic Chief Financial & Operations Officer (CFOO) to partner with the Head of School and senior leadership team. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the CFOO oversees all financial and operational aspects of the school, ensuring fiscal integrity and operational excellence in alignment with the schools mission.

The CFOO also serves as liaison to the AFS School Committee (the school's governing body), co-leading the Finance and Property Subcommittees, and providing critical insight for strategic decision-making.

Direct reports include:

• Controller (Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, School Store)
• Director of Physical Plant (Including Security)
• School Nurse

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Partner with the Head of School and leadership team on strategic and financial planning.
• Advise the Board of Trustees on institutional strategy, financial sustainability, enrollment, and risk management.
• Present at Board orientations, committee meetings, and community forums.

Accounting & Operations

• Lead business office functions, including billing, collections, accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger.
• Ensure accuracy, efficiency, and customer service within the Business Office.
• Oversee internal controls, audits, compliance, and financial reporting.
• Manage tuition policy and delinquent accounts.
• Lead the budgeting process and produce annual operating and capital budgets.
• Collaborate with school leadership on enrollment, tuition, and financial models.
• Monitor budget compliance, prepare forecasts, and provide clear financial reporting.
• Align financial planning with mission priorities.

Investments & Cash Management

• Work with the Investment Committee and manage endowment and cash flow.
• Maintain strong banking relationships and oversee liquidity and credit facilities.
• Support advancement and fundraising efforts through financial planning.

Data Strategy & Benchmarking

• Participate in benchmarking and national surveys (NBOA, NAIS, PAFSBOA).
• Develop dashboards and financial models to support strategic decision-making.

Facilities & Operations

• Oversee campus facilities, maintenance, and capital projects.
• Negotiate and manage vendor contracts and outsourced services.
• Serve as liaison to municipal, regulatory, and community organizations.

Human Resources, Benefits & Risk Management

• Administer employee benefit programs and ensure compliance.
• Lead risk management, including insurance, liability, and crisis planning.

Safety & Security

• Oversee campus safety policies, protocols, and staff.
• Maintain crisis communication plans and security systems.

Auxiliary Programs

• Manage summer camps, rentals, dining services, school store, and vendor relationships
• Oversee revenue and expense management for auxiliary enterprises.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in independent schools, higher education, or mission-driven organizations; corporate experience also considered.
• Expertise in financial planning, budgeting, and accounting operations.
• Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
• Bachelors degree in Accounting, Business, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
